About our water damage repair
Water-damaged drywall does not recover. Gypsum that has been wet loses its strength, the paper face delaminates, and the board sags or crumbles even after it looks dry again. So this is a removal-and-rebuild job rather than a fill: the affected board comes out, and new board, tape and texture go back. One thing has to happen first, though.
The source of the water has to be repaired by the appropriate trade — a plumber, a roofer, an HVAC contractor — and the cavity has to be dry before we open a wall. We are painting contractors, not remediation specialists, and we do not do mold remediation. Typical calls involve a ceiling stain beneath an upstairs bathroom, a wall behind a failed water heater, or condensation dripping from an attic air handler or evaporative cooler during an inland summer.
Once the area is dry, we cut back past the stain line to solid board, check the framing and insulation condition, and rebuild to the studs or joists. Stains that bleed get a stain-blocking primer, because water marks ghost straight through latex otherwise. Texture is matched, the ceiling or wall is primed and painted to a natural break, and the repair disappears.

Why it pays off
Honest about scope
We tell you plainly what a painting contractor should and should not be doing here. Leak repair, mold remediation and abatement belong to other licensed trades, and we will say so.
Cut past the damage
Board that has been soaked keeps failing, so we remove beyond the visible stain rather than trimming to it. A tight cut is how a ceiling repair sags again later.
Stains that stay gone
Water marks are dye, not dirt. Sealing them with a stain-blocking primer before topcoat is the only reliable way to keep them from ghosting back through fresh ceiling paint.
Finished, not just repaired
The ceiling or wall leaves textured, primed and painted to a break, so you are not left with a gray rectangle waiting on a second contractor.
Our process
How we approach water damage repair
The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.

Source fixed first
We do not open a wall while it is still getting wet. The leak has to be repaired by the plumber, roofer or HVAC contractor who owns it, and the cavity dried out, before our scope begins.

Map the damage
Stains spread further than the failure. We press the board to find where it has gone soft, follow the tide line past the discoloration, and mark a cut square to the nearest framing members.

Remove the failed board
Compromised board and any wet insulation behind it are cut out and bagged. If what we uncover looks like it needs a remediation specialist rather than a painting contractor, we stop and tell you.

Rebuild and tape
New board of matching thickness is screwed to the framing with backing added at unsupported edges. Seams are taped and set with a setting-type compound, which handles a ceiling seam better than the air-dry kind.

Block the stain
Any remaining discoloration on adjacent board or framing is sealed with a stain-blocking primer. Skip it and a brown halo will bleed back through two coats of ceiling white within weeks.

Texture, prime, paint
Coats are floated and pole-sanded flat, the surrounding texture is sprayed back, and the surface is primed and painted to the nearest corner or ceiling line so the sheen has nowhere to break.
