Garage Door Painting

Overview

About our garage door painting

On most tract houses the garage door is the largest single thing you see from the curb, and it is usually the most faded. Steel sectional doors chalk and lose their gloss, wood doors check and peel at the bottom panels, and either way the panel edges and stiles fail first because water and sun both collect along them.

The request generally arrives alongside an exterior repaint, an association color notice, or a house going on the market. West-facing driveways across the Inland Empire cook all afternoon, and a door that was builder-white a decade ago now reads pink or gray beside fresh trim. Wood doors nearer the coastal marine layer in North Orange County pick up moisture and mildew instead of chalking.

We open the door and work it in sections, so joints, hinge areas and panel edges actually receive coating rather than getting skipped in the closed position. Track, rollers, weatherstrip and opener hardware are masked. Steel takes a bonding primer over sanded chalk, and wood gets bare areas primed with any soft bottom-panel material addressed before color goes on.

Why it pays off

  • Curb Appeal Where It Counts

A garage door can occupy a third of a front elevation. Refinishing it changes how the whole house reads from the street more than any other single surface on the property.

  • Coated for Full Sun

Driveway-facing doors carry a direct afternoon load. Prep and product are chosen for that exposure, so the finish holds its color instead of chalking back within a season or two.

  • Hardware Kept Clean

Tracks, rollers, springs and weatherstrip are masked off, and the door is cycled before we leave, so nothing binds and nothing ends up stuck to fresh paint.

  • Matches the Trim Scheme

Door color is specified alongside body, trim and front door so the elevation reads as one scheme, including association-approved palettes where a committee has already set the colors.

Our process

How we approach garage door painting

The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.

  1. 01

    Wash Off the Chalk

The door is washed to remove chalked oxidized paint, driveway dust and grease thrown by the opener. A chalky steel skin will not hold a new coat no matter how carefully it is applied.

  2. 02

    Sand and Feather

Peeling and flaking areas are scraped, their edges feather-sanded so repairs do not telegraph, and the whole face scuff-sanded to break remaining gloss. Rust on steel is taken back to sound metal.

  3. 03

    Mask the Hardware

Tracks, rollers, hinges, springs, the opener bracket, weatherstrip and the wall around the opening are all masked. Paint in a track or on a roller is how a smooth door starts binding.

  4. 04

    Prime for the Substrate

Steel takes a bonding or rust-inhibitive primer, wood takes a stain-blocking primer on bare and patched areas. Panels, stiles and rails are primed as separate faces rather than as one flat slab.

  5. 05

    Coat Panel by Panel

The door is positioned so each section, joint and panel edge can be reached, then given two finish coats. Working with the sections rather than the closed face keeps the recesses from going thin.

  6. 06

    Cycle and Inspect

Once the coating has set, masking comes off and the door is cycled to check clearance, weatherstrip and hardware. Edges at the jamb and along the bottom rail get a final look.
