Trim & Baseboard Painting
Overview
About our trim & baseboard painting
Trim is the highest-contact paint in a house, and it wants a different product from the walls around it. Baseboards take vacuum cleaners and shoes, casing takes hands, and both need an enamel that cures hard instead of a wall paint that stays soft. The seams matter even more than the surface, since an uncaulked gap above a baseboard reads as a permanent shadow line.
Trim gets requested on its own more often than any other interior service: walls still look acceptable, but the white has gone yellow, chipped at the corners, or was never more than a thin builder coat to begin with. Landlords repaint it between tenants for the same reasons. Two-story tract homes bring a lot of linear footage, between stair skirt, railings and casing on every opening.
Sequencing is what keeps trim looking clean. Sanding, caulking and priming happen before any enamel, floor-level runs are worked from knee pads rather than reached at, and the wall line is cut by hand so paint stops where the trim stops. Dry inland air treats enamel kindly between coats, though recoat windows still get respected instead of rushed.

Why it pays off
Enamel Built for Contact
Trim is coated in an enamel that cures hard instead of a softer wall paint. That is what lets a baseboard take a vacuum cleaner without scuffing or a chair without printing into it.
Seams That Disappear
Caulking the trim-to-wall joint removes the shadow gap that makes good carpentry look unfinished. It is a slow step, and it is the one people notice most once it is done.
Straight, Deliberate Edges
Wall and trim meet in a clean line cut by brush. No ragged tape bleed along the top of the baseboard, and no white creeping out onto the wall color.
Works With or Without Walls
Trim can be refreshed on its own while the wall color stays put, or sequenced into a full interior repaint. Either way, the scope is written out before the first sanding block comes out.
Our process
How we approach trim & baseboard painting
The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.
- 01
Clean and Degloss
Trim collects hand oil, dust and furniture polish. Runs are washed, then scuff-sanded with 180 to 220 grit so new enamel has a mechanical key rather than sitting on top of old gloss.
- 02
Fill and Sand Smooth
Chips, dents, nail holes and open miters are filled with a hard-setting filler, then sanded flush and dusted off. Outside corners on baseboards and casing take the most damage and need the most attention.
- 03
Caulk the Seams
The joint where casing and baseboard meet the wall is caulked with paintable acrylic latex and tooled tight. That single line separates trim that looks installed from trim that merely looks painted.
- 04
Prime Bare and Patched
Bare wood, filler and any bleeding knots are spot-primed with a stain-blocking primer, so finish coats cover evenly and tannins cannot work their way up through a white enamel.
- 05
Enamel Finish Coats
Two coats of waterborne or alkyd enamel are brushed and rolled with full recoat time between them. The film has to cure hard to survive shoes, chair legs and a vacuum head.
- 06
Cut the Wall Line
The top edge of the baseboard and the outer edge of casing are cut by hand against the wall color. Where texture invites bleed, the tape line is sealed first and pulled while paint is still workable.
