About our skim coating
Skim coating treats the whole surface instead of a spot. A thin layer of compound is spread over an entire wall or ceiling, then sanded back, so texture, old patch work, orange peel and wallpaper scars all end up in one continuous plane. Patching and repair fix a location; skim coating changes the finish of the surface itself.
Two groups ask for it. Homeowners chasing the flat, modern look — heavy knockdown is close to universal in Inland Empire subdivisions built through the 1990s and 2000s — and anyone left with a patchwork surface after a remodel, a wallpaper strip-out or a popcorn ceiling scrape. It is also the right call before a dark accent color or a satin sheen, which both throw shadows across texture.
Flat is unforgiving, so we build it in stages rather than one thick pass. The surface is cleaned and sealed, knockdown peaks are knocked off, and coats are laid on and pulled tight in alternating directions until nothing catches a raked light. A high-build primer follows, because bare skim drinks paint unevenly. The wall should look like it was never textured.

Why it pays off
One continuous plane
Skimming the full wall removes the patch-versus-field problem entirely. There is no blend line to find later, because the whole surface has the same finish and the same porosity.
Built for sidelight
Flat walls are judged by the window, not the doorway. Crossing the coats and sanding under raked light is what keeps lap lines and trowel edges out of the afternoon sun.
Ready for dark colors
Deep colors and satin or eggshell sheens expose texture and repairs that flat paint forgives. A skimmed surface is the substrate those finishes actually need.
Dust kept in check
Skim sanding makes a lot of fine dust, so the room is sheeted, vents are sealed and surfaces are wiped down before paint. Licensed, bonded and insured, with a free written estimate.
Our process
How we approach skim coating
The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.
- 01
Prep and seal
Walls are washed, gloss is dulled, and old adhesive or wallpaper paste is sealed with primer. Compound spread over a contaminated or glossy surface will not bond and will blister later.
- 02
Knock off high spots
Heavy knockdown and splatter peaks are scraped or sanded down before skimming. Burying tall texture under compound takes far more material and leaves a wall that rolls slightly under sidelight.
- 03
Fix the underlying faults
Cracks get taped, holes get filled and fasteners get reset now. A skim coat levels a surface but it will not hold a moving joint together or stop a popped screw from returning.

First skim coat
Compound thinned to a spreadable consistency is applied with a wide knife or trowel and pulled tight, filling the valleys and leaving only a film on the high points.

Second coat, crossed
The next coat runs across the direction of the first, which cancels out the lap lines a single-direction pass leaves. A third goes on wherever the surface still shows through.

Sand and prime
Pole sanding takes the surface to a Level 5 standard, checked with a light raked flat along the wall. A high-build primer seals the compound so the finish coat lays down at one even sheen.
