Texture Matching

Overview

About our texture matching

Texture matching is the step that decides whether a repair reads as invisible or obvious. Compound dries dead smooth, and a smooth island inside an orange peel wall shows from the doorway in raking light. This work is about identifying the existing pattern, the spray tip and air pressure that produced it, and reproducing it across the repair and into the field around it.

Almost every tract home built inland since the 1980s is textured. Light orange peel is the default on walls, knockdown shows up on ceilings and in newer Eastvale and Menifee subdivisions, and hand-applied skip trowel turns up in Spanish and Mediterranean-styled houses. Anyone who has had a repair, a remodel, or a popcorn ceiling scraped off needs the surface put back to match.

Our practice is to sample before committing. We shoot a test board, adjust tip size, thinning and pressure until the stipple size and density line up, and only then spray the wall. Knockdown gets timed — too early and it smears, too late and it stays proud. The blend is carried well beyond the patch, primed, and finished at the same sheen as the room.

Why it pays off

  • Tested before sprayed

Sampling on scrap board is far quicker than re-sanding a whole wall. The texture goes on once, at the right stipple, rather than being guessed at in place.

  • Blends with no edge

Fading the spray into the field and painting to a natural break is what removes the rectangle. Stopping at the patch line leaves a visible frame no matter how good the stipple.

  • Ceilings included

Ceilings are where texture mismatches show worst, because light crosses them at a low angle all day. We match ceiling patterns as carefully as walls, working off ladders and staging.

  • Contained overspray

Spray texture travels. Doorways, floors, trim and fixtures are masked before the gun comes out, and the room is cleaned back to how it was found.

Our process

How we approach texture matching

The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.

  1. 01

    Identify the texture

First we work out what is on the wall: orange peel, knockdown, splatter, skip trowel or a hand-troweled smooth finish. Stipple size and how flattened the peaks are tell us tip and pressure.

  2. 02

    Prep the repair flat

Texture only matches over a flat base, so the patch is floated and sanded true first. Any ridge left under the spray shows through the new stipple as a shadow line.

  3. 03

    Spray a test panel

Compound is thinned to the consistency the pattern needs and shot onto scrap board next to the wall. We change tips and drop or raise pressure until the sample disappears against the existing texture.

  4. 04

    Mask and spray the blend

With the room masked and floors covered, texture is sprayed over the repair and faded out into the surrounding field so there is no hard edge where new meets old.

  5. 05

    Knock down or trowel

Knockdown is flattened with a wide blade once the spatter has set just enough to flatten without dragging. Skip trowel and hand finishes are worked by hand to follow the direction of the original.

  6. 06

    Prime and match sheen

New texture is sealed with primer, then painted out to a break — a corner or a ceiling line — at the same sheen, because a flat blend inside an eggshell wall is just as visible as a smooth one.
