About our cabinet painting
Painting cabinets is cabinetry work with a finish attached to the end of it. Doors and drawer fronts come off and get labeled, hinges and pulls are bagged by opening, and every surface is degreased before abrasive touches it, because sanding an ungreased door only drives kitchen oil deeper into the grain. The coating then has to cure hard enough for fingernails and dish towels.
This is the project for a kitchen whose boxes are solid but whose honey-oak finish dates the entire room. Landlords use it to modernize a unit without replacing cabinetry. In newer Eastvale and Temescal Valley subdivisions, builder-grade stained maple gets painted out to lighten a dark galley, while 1980s Riverside kitchens usually need a thorough deglossing before anything will stick.
Setup takes most of the first day. We build a spray area, mask the kitchen off from the rest of the house, and keep a path to the sink and refrigerator open, since a kitchen cannot simply be closed for a week. Doors are sprayed flat and cured between coats; dry inland air helps, but recoat windows on the product data sheet still get respected.

Why it pays off
A Real Color Change
Boxes, doors, drawer fronts and the face frames are all addressed, so the kitchen reads as a new color rather than as fresh doors hung on an old cabinet run.
Sprayed, Not Brushed
Doors leave with a sprayed film that levels out flat. That is what separates a cabinet finish from a wall finish, and it is the reason doors come off the boxes at all.
Hardware Stays Organized
Every hinge, screw and pull is bagged and mapped to its opening. Doors go back where they were hung, so alignment and soft-close action still work the way they did before.
Kitchen Stays Usable
The spray area is isolated with plastic and access to the sink, refrigerator and a walking path stays open, so the household is not locked out of the room it uses most.
Our process
How we approach cabinet painting
The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.
- 01
Label and Remove
Doors, drawer fronts, hinges and pulls come off and every piece is numbered to its opening. Reinstalling to the original position keeps reveals and gaps consistent instead of fighting doors that no longer line up.

Degrease Thoroughly
Cooking grease sits on the cabinets above a range as a film that sanding alone will not remove. Surfaces are washed with a degreaser and rinsed so primer bonds to wood rather than to residue.

Deglossing Sand
Factory lacquer and conversion varnish are scuff-sanded with 180 to 220 grit to break the sheen, edges and profiles included. Dust is vacuumed and wiped down with a tack cloth before priming.

Bonding Primer
A bonding primer goes on doors and boxes, tinted toward the finish color, and is sanded lightly once dry. Open-grain oak gets grain filling at this stage if a glass-smooth finish is the goal.

Spray Finish Coats
Doors are sprayed horizontally in the masked booth area and boxes sprayed in place, with two finish coats and full recoat times between them, so the film builds evenly and levels without brush marks.
- 06
Cure and Reinstall
Hardware and doors return to their labeled openings, bumpers go on, and we ask you to treat the surfaces gently while the coating finishes hardening past its initial dry time.
