Fencing fails from two directions at once: ultraviolet light from above and moisture from below. Wood pickets go gray and fuzzy on the sun side while their bottoms stay damp from lawn sprinklers, and wrought iron rusts wherever the coating runs thinnest, at welds, scrolls and the base of each picket. Prep has to answer both problems or the coating peels in strips.
Backyard privacy fencing, side-yard gates, pool enclosures and wrought-iron front fencing all come up, often within the same visit. Homeowners in newer Inland Empire subdivisions have long runs of wood fence shared between lots, while older Riverside properties tend toward iron and block in combination. Associations frequently specify a fence color for anything visible from the street.
Irrigation gets shut off and the wood gets time to dry before anything is applied, because coating damp lumber traps water and sets up peeling later on. Boards are worked with the grain and we cut into the gaps between pickets rather than skimming the faces. When Santa Ana winds kick up, masking on hardscape gets weighted and spraying gives way to brushing.

Why it pays off
Both Sides, Not One
Fence faces, back sides, post tops and the gaps between pickets all get coated. A fence painted only where you stand fails from the side you never happen to look at.
Sprinkler Damage Addressed
Irrigation is shut off and lumber allowed to dry before coating, and post bases get primed first. Lawn water is what rots the bottom of a fence far more often than rain does.
Rust Taken Back Properly
Wrought iron is de-rusted to sound metal and primed with a rust inhibitor. Painting over active rust only hides it while it keeps lifting the coating from underneath.
Gates Still Work After
Hinges, latches and drop rods are masked and then cycled. A gate that swings and latches the way it did before is part of the finish, not an afterthought.
Our process
How we approach fence & gate painting
The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.
- 01
Shut Off Irrigation
Sprinklers and drip lines near the fence line are turned off ahead of the work, and the lumber is allowed to dry through. Moisture still in the boards is the most common cause of early peeling.
- 02
Clean and Dry
Wood is washed to remove gray weathered fiber, dirt and mildew, and iron is degreased. Both get real drying time rather than a towel wipe before any abrasive or primer touches them.
- 03
Sand, Scrape, De-Rust
Loose coating is scraped and feather-sanded, splintered board edges are knocked down, and rust on metal is taken back to sound substrate with a wire wheel or an abrasive pad.

Prime the Problem Areas
Bare wood, knots and end grain take a stain-blocking primer, and sanded metal takes a rust-inhibitive primer. Post bases, rail joints and welds get primed first, because that is where failure begins.

Coat Front, Back, Gaps
Boards are coated on both faces and into the gaps, with extra attention to top end grain where water sits. Iron pickets are coated all the way around instead of only on the street side.

Hang and Latch Check
Gates are rehung or rechecked once the coating has set, and latches, hinges and drop rods are cycled so nothing has been painted shut or left dragging on the slab.
