Nail Hole Repair

Overview

About our nail hole repair

This is the fine pass, not a structural one. Picture hooks, pin nails, thumbtacks, the small ring of holes a TV mount leaves behind — dozens of tiny voids that are quick individually and easy to miss collectively. Drywall patching deals with damage that needs backing and floating; drywall repair deals with damage that needs new board. Nail hole work is about count, not size.

Move-out walls are the classic case: frames and photographs come down, and the hallway reads like a constellation. It also comes up before a whole-house repaint, after a gallery wall comes down, and in rental turnovers where textured walls make every filled hole want to shine through. Inland Empire subdivisions from the 1990s onward are almost all textured.

We walk the room with a light held close to the wall and mark what we find, because a hole you cannot see from the doorway is obvious once a fresh coat catches it. Holes are pressed in, filled slightly proud, sanded flush by hand, and spot-primed. Nothing gets left as a dimple or a bump — the wall reads as one plane under paint.

Why it pays off

  • Nothing missed

The light-rake walk is the whole trick. Holes get found while they are cheap to fix, instead of appearing in the sheen of a finished wall at the walkthrough.

  • No flat halos

Spot-priming every fill and sanding by sponge instead of pole keeps the texture and the sheen continuous, which is what makes the repairs vanish rather than merely disappear from touch.

  • Built into the paint scope

On our interior jobs this pass is part of preparation, not a line item bolted on afterward, so there is no gap between who filled the holes and who painted over them.

  • Turnover-ready walls

Property managers and sellers get walls that photograph clean and pass a walkthrough. We are licensed, bonded and insured, and the scope is written out before we start.

Our process

How we approach nail hole repair

The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.

  1. 01

    Walk and mark

Before anything is filled, we cross the room with a light raked along the wall and pencil a light circle beside every hole, hook and tack mark so none of them survive into the finish coat.

  2. 02

    Pull hardware and dimple

Hooks, anchors and mount screws come out. Where a nail pushed the paper out into a crater lip, the edge is tapped back below the surface so the fill has a pocket instead of a mound.

  3. 03

    Fill and refill

Each hole is filled with the lightweight compound we specify, pressed in with a putty knife and left a hair proud. Anything deep gets a second pass once the first has pulled back.

  4. 04

    Sand flush by hand

Fills are knocked down with a fine sanding sponge rather than a pole, because a machine over a textured wall flattens the texture around the hole and creates a halo you can see from across the room.

  5. 05

    Spot-prime the fills

Bare compound is porous and soaks up paint at a different rate than the wall, so every fill is sealed with primer. That is what keeps a repaired hallway from reading as a field of flat dots.

  6. 06

    Final light check

We re-rake the light before rolling. Anything still catching a shadow is refilled and re-sanded then, not after the wall is painted, when fixing it means blending a whole new patch.
