Drywall Repair

Overview

About our drywall repair

Drywall repair is the structural end of the work: damage too large or too compromised to simply fill. A doorway-sized hole, a crushed outside corner, a ceiling sagging between joists — these need new board, new backing, and new tape. That separates repair from patching, which floats over damage the existing board still supports, and from nail hole repair, a finish pass before paint.

Homeowners call about impact damage in hallways, water-stained ceiling board beneath an upstairs bathroom, and corner bead dented by furniture on move-out day. Inland Empire tract homes are framed for half-inch board on 16-inch centers, so ceilings sag where attic traffic has crushed a panel. Across Riverside and San Bernardino counties, rental turnovers surface the same failures between tenants.

We work to the framing rather than around it: the cutout is scribed square, backing goes in wherever an edge lands over open cavity, and the new board is tied in with tape, not compound alone. Coats are floated wide, sanded under raking light, and primed so the patch does not flash. The target is simple — the repair disappears under paint.

Why it pays off

  • Repaired, not covered

Cutting back to solid board and framing means the fix does not telegraph or crack again a season later. Compound floated over failing board always comes back.

  • Invisible under paint

Wide feathering, raked-light sanding and a matched spray texture are what keep a repair from showing as a bright rectangle once the wall is rolled out.

  • One trade, start to finish

Board, tape, texture and paint all happen under one scope, so nothing stalls waiting for a second contractor and nobody argues about whose edge it is.

  • Licensed and insured

Amaral Precision Painting is licensed, bonded and insured under CA LIC# 1160754, and every repair scope is written out in a free estimate before tools come off the truck.

Our process

How we approach drywall repair

The order matters as much as the materials. This is the sequence we follow, and the estimate spells out which steps your job needs.

  1. 01

    Locate and cut back

We tap out the wall to find where the board is still solid, square the cutout to the nearest studs or joists, and cut with a keyhole saw kept clear of wiring and plumbing runs.

  2. 02

    Set the backing

Where a cut edge falls over an open cavity, we screw in wood backing or a furring strip so the replacement panel has something to fasten to on all four sides.

  3. 03

    Fit the new board

The replacement is cut to matching thickness, set with a slight gap at the seams, and screwed on 12-inch centers with heads dimpled just below the surface — never broken through the paper.

  4. 04

    Tape and fill

Seams get paper tape bedded in compound; butt joints and any mesh-taped edge get a setting-type compound that dries hard and shrinks less. Corner bead is refastened or replaced before anything is floated over it.

  5. 05

    Float and sand

Two more coats of all-purpose compound go on with progressively wider knives, feathered well past the tape line. We sand with a pole sander and check the result with a light raked flat across the wall.

  6. 06

    Texture and prime

The surrounding texture is sprayed back to match, then the whole repair is sealed with primer so the new compound does not drink up the finish coat and flash a different sheen.
